Electronic Dictionary

The technology growth and the internet growth are very fast in Malaysia. The technology growth has assisted me a lot in enhanced my writing skill, my knowledge and the technology has assisted me in pursuing my master. 

I still remember when I pursued my diploma in year 1987 to 1990, I did not own any computer and carried a bulky dictionary to the class..Normally I have to go University computer lab to do my assignment and I used typewriter to do my assignment .I remember when I wanted to do my ETR assignment, I did in group assignment and we have to use typewriter to type and we carried a bulky dictionary everywhere we go because to get the accurate meaning of the word that we used in our assignment. Using dictionary has improved my learning and writing ability and also motivated myself as a student to read more materials according to my interest. The dictionary has become a tool to assist me as a student in understanding as well as enlightening the skill of reading. My reading would be interesting if I can understand the material, and this is when the dictionary plays its role as a medium to facilitate me in reading. Hence, this overcomes the difficulties in my understanding the reading material. 

A Dictionary plays an important role in learning a language as a dictionary can serve a lot of purposes especially in providing the definition of words. The dictionary consists of the various parts of speech and it also acts as a reference for the purpose of an excellent and accurate language. 

The physical form of the dictionary is big and thick and this has required more time to search for the definition of a word .Thus the development of a language and technology has developed the traditional book to the use of technology which created a computerized dictionary or electronic dictionary. The development has been going on for several eras from traditional book to the use of technology such as computerized dictionary or electronic dictionary. 

Apparently, with the development of science and technology, computer is seen as one of the effective teaching and learning aid. With the existence of this technology, an electronic dictionary would certainly give ease to the teaching and learning process as well as benefiting both teachers and students. This dictionary is created in a database with a colorful texts and attractive interface loaded with graphic and sound in which hopefully will increase the interest of the user to use the dictionary, thus improving their reading skill. 

Due to rapid development in technology, the electronic dictionary is no longer a novelty to world and the tremendous improvement in technology has being overwhelming dictionary users with a variety of electronic dictionaries. The electronic dictionaries become more widely used as electronic dictionary normally has a friendly user features and with attractive display and colors. It is also has a combination of audio and visual. The audio and visual can help the users to pronounce the word accurately and encourage them to use the dictionary thus developing a broad command of vocabulary. Some of the electronic dictionary has apps for bilingual dictionaries for numerous language pairs. 

The electronic dictionary has two types: 

· An online electronic dictionary 

· Offline dictionary 

What is online Dictionary?

The online dictionary is an internet dictionary which provided by the websites and can be access directly from the internet. Some of the websites offers a free access and some of the websites imposes annual fees to access the dictionary. The advantage of using this type of dictionary is that it can be access at any place as long as there is an internet connection .Now it become popular as it can be download to the Smartphone and no longer to carry big and thick dictionary to anywhere. The use of internet dictionary is helping the users to search the definition of a word faster regardless of place and time. There a lot of online dictionary such as Collins Online Dictionary, Macmillan English Dictionary, Merriam -Webster Learner Dictionary and etc. 

Some online dictionaries are regularly updated, keeping abreast of language change. Many have additional content, such as blogs and new additional words.

What is offline Dictionary?

The offline dictionary is in the form of compact disc and can be uploaded to computer. The offline dictionary can be used with a computer or data assistant (PDA) and the user does not need to have the internet connection to access to dictionary and free from internet interruption. 

In the long run it is expect that the electronic dictionary will overshadow the paper dictionary in the same way as the computer has superseded the typewriter.

Technology and Social Media in Malaysia

I still remember in 80th, very hard to find a telephone especially in the rural area and the public phones were located at the busy area such as bus stop. The affordable family only had telephone at home. Later in 1985 the first mobile phone introduced in Malaysia. The improved in technology has made a great change in telecommunication especially mobile phone. When the mobile phone launched, the mobile phone can only made a call, thus due to this feature, the used of pager became famous. The user was able to receive short message from pager and if the user wants to know the detail of the message, the user has to call the call centers .The evolution of mobile phones occurs at very fast pace. The personal computer was also become famous followed by the laptop and notebook. .In 2007 the mobile phones have become a must devices that everybody have and now most young people has a Smartphone. The Smartphone is very stylish and equipped with an advanced feature which could be an alternative to the computer. In the last 25 years ago when the mobile phone came in to Malaysia the mobile phone  came with a huge, bulky or big size and with an antenna .At the beginning stage the user can only made a call and there was no short message feature. After the features of short message launched, most Malaysian was keen to send SMS rather than call as the cost is very cheap. Furthermore most Malaysia TV programs used SMS to communicate and the SMS became popular. 

The internet came to Malaysia somewhere in 1995 and the first Malaysia search engine and portal founded namely as Cari Internet. In order to meet the technology growth the broadband was introduced in Malaysia .Now in Malaysia has cellular broadband, DSL, Fibre optic, WIFI broadband, hotspot and Leased Line ,VSAT ,WiMAX and etc .

Although the call and SMS feature was improved and enhanced the new application name Chatting Messenger seem became popular to Malaysia as it can be freely download. This social media became popular as the new media provide free call and SMS or chatting within the group using the internet data.

Some of the chatting application can be free download at the handphone and some in the computer. Now the young people more interested to have this application in the handphone. Most of Gen Y nowadays has the account with the new social media.

Although my age is already forty plus, but I still use the chatting messenger to communicate .For instance Viber , I can sent message , files , photo , location via Viber and also can made a call via Viber  with no cost  as the Viber is using the internet data. Among the famous social media in Malaysia nowadays is Facebook , WhatApps and etc.

The recent PRU had also made the social media became interesting and popular to communicate and it has became an important communication tools. The result of the PRU was also can be view by slide the hand phone’s slider and the result came out via any social media that the user is exploring.Information was sent out through social media within moments for the PRU result, but some of it was misleading and wrong.

 Even though social networking is a great concept, there are many precautionary measures that we should take to ensure it is a safe experience.The user should precaution as there is no verification procedure for people who wish to join the site. Almost the entire Internet allows the user to remain anonymous if user choose to. But because of this reason there is no assurance that the person may actually be who he claims to be online.Therefore, it is important that the user to understand a site's privacy settings completely before the user log on.

Remote Access to Computer

What is remote access to computer?

Do you know that you can access your office computer from your home or anywhere ? I have tried this application few times. Before I tried this application I always hear from my IT Officer mentioned about the remote access but I just ignored it. But early of last year I was on long medical leave and during that medical leave my client called me many times to know their outstanding balance, but I could not reveal the detail as the record was not in my hand. Thus I decided to call my IT officer and he taught me how to access the record from my home and what the application needed.

What does it mean?

The remote access is actually a technology which allows a user to logging into a system with an authorized user ID without being physically present in front of its keyboard. The remotes access computer can be used to the computer networking which has linked and access to the internet.

“In broad terms, remote access refers to workers being able to access data or resources from a remote location. Traditional remote access solutions used dial-up technologies to allow employees to connect to an office network via telephone networks connecting to remote access servers.”

How it works?

A remotes access is allowed the user to access on one computer to see, to view ,to read and to interact with the actual desktop user interface of another computer. It needs to configure the software for both host (local computer controlling the connection) and target (remote computer being accessed). When connected, the software will open a window on the host system containing a view of the target's desktop. The sophisticated form of remote access now enables users to access from desktop computer and also the Smartphones.

Remote Access to Files

As a user you are allow to access to view, to read from and written to the target, even without remote desktop capability in place which you can use the Virtual Private Network (VPN) technology. This technology provides a remote login and file access functionality across wide area networks (WANs).

What do you need to access the Remote Access?

You need to have a desktop computer or your Smartphone or need to have Virtual Private Network (VPN) technology.

You need to have Microsoft Windows include Remote Desktop Connection which the software package only supports target computers running Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate versions of the O/S, making it unsuitable for use with many home networks. Microsoft Windows which built into Windows XP and later versions of Windows is allow to access to remote access .It is also available for Mac users and Apple also offers Apple Remote Desktop software for network administrators to manage Mac computers on a network

Or you need to have a desktop solution which based on Virtual Network Computing (VNC) technology. The software work across multiple operating systems.

Personal Hotspot - IPhone

What is personal hotspot? Do you know? As I mentioned in my previous entry, I’m not a technology savvy. Although I have 2 Smartphones yet I still blur with the features. I didn’t know that my Iphone 4S can be a WIFI to another handphone or computer until last year. I only knew that my Iphone4S can be a WIFI while I was trying to search the Uitm Student WIFI last year when I received a WIFI signal from the other IPhone User. I keep asking my colleagues how to be a Personal Hotspot who also has IPhone but the answer was they do not know how to be a Personal Hotspot.

Last month when I went to Firdaus’s office to do my group assignment ,I was trying to charge my Iphone battery using my laptop using the USB and at the same time I was also surfing the assignment data via my phone then only I realized how it work to be the “PERSONAL HOTSPOT”.

Personal Hotspot is features of iOS 4.3 and higher for the iPhone. The features allow sharing its wireless data connection with another device via WIFI, Bluetooth or USB. .This will act as a wireless router to the device which is able to transmit and receive data for another device. An iPhone 4 or higher is for WIFI connection whereby iPhone 3GS offer Bluetooth and USB connections.

To begin setting up a Personal Hotspot –iPhone (mine is iPhone 4S), you need

Step 1: Need to have IPhone 3GS or higher

Step 2: Need to have an active internet data plan at handphone

Step 3: Tap the Setting Menu Screen – Tap General

Step 4: The Cellular Data must be “ON” on the General Screen -

Cellular – ON/OFF – slide Cellular slider to ON

Once you slide Cellular to ON, you will be able to turn On the Personal Hotspot

You will be given the WIFI password to share with your iPhone internet connection. However you will be allowed to change your password by tap the password field and edit it on the next screen

This snapshot no. 6 shows that the setting up the Personal Hotspot is done and ready to connect to it. The connection can be via Wifi, Bluetooth and USB or networks. When it has connected to other devices, the Personal Hotspot message will come out and you can see a message in blue color at the top of the screen .The Personal Hotspot is active and will show how many users is connected to it.

Now the Personal Hotspot has been successful set up and you may turn off at anytime you want. To turn on in future, you just simply tap the Setting Icon and set up again.

Blackberry Curve Vs IPhone 4S

My first hand phone was Alcatel. The hand phone was a gift from my aruah abah.I has started using the hand phone since September 2000. Honestly I’m not the technology savvy. Now I have two Smartphones which one for my office contact and another one for my personal contact. The Blackberry Curve for my office contact and the Iphone 4S is for personal contact. Both hand phones are connecting to internet. 

     

I have started using the Blackberry DATA plan on 1st May 2011 whereby the Iphone 4S on 6th June 2012.As I said before I’m not a technology savvy , my first bill for the first month used the Blackberry was almost RM500.00 , which I was so surprised and shock to receive the bill. The number of SMS sent from my handphone was almost 400 SMS and the Internet DATA used was about RM200 00. The phone seller did not advise me to stop the internet connection, thus the Internet DATA is running without my knowledge and I did not subscribing the Internet DATA plan. I also did not realize that my phone is sending SMS to my contact list in the phonebook with a text message “Drive Safely” via the voice response feature in the handphone. This feature is able to communicate by sending and receiving messages without touching the phone. Once an incoming text message is read aloud, the user can choose to replay the message, speak a response back to the sender or even call back the sender and be able to read the emails entirely by voice

Again the second incident happened to myself when I started have the IPhone 4S my Call Credit balance in the Smartphone missing without my knowledge and again the same mistake happened. I did not realize that the cellular internet was on without the Internet DATA plan, thus the provider of the internet deducted the usage from my call credit.

My advice to all friends before you buy the Smart phone you should understand the basic feature and not only buy the Smartphone without knowing the basic of the hand phone features and its technologies.

Although I have two Smartphone but I’m still blur with the technology however I managed to identify and explore a few of the technologies which has assist me in my work life and study life as well as personal life.

Text Message (SMS) from the Blackberry 

The text message (SMS) which was sent from the Blackberry can be forwarded to:

a. Email

b. Text Message

c. Blackberry Messenger Chat

d. PIN – this is the Blackberry ID number

e. Facebook

I always forward the office SMS to my email address for my future reference. This is the feature that my Phone 4S does not has.

In the event the text message is not delivered to the recipient due to the recipient hand phone is off, the delivery indication will not indicate delivered, its will wait until the recipient on the hand phone and received its. The indication will appear as “ D√” upon the text message delivered.

Text Message (SMS) from the IPhone 4S

The IPhone 4S has an application namely as “SIRI”. This feature is a voice response and allows the speech to convert to the text sending as SMS. I can use the SIRI when the internet is connected to the handphone and can send the SMS with voice command and SIRI will convert to text and send to recipient. However I do not know whether the SMS is deliver or pending as there is no indication whether the SMS has been delivered or still pending. 

Email 

I can send email for my office matters and personal email from my both handphones. Before I use the Smartphone I do not know that I can send the email from the handphone.

BlackBerry Messenger

The user of Blackberry is given a free PIN number .The Pin number allow the Blackberry user to communicate via BBM Messenger with other PIN number with a free of charged. It is also has a voice chat feature. 

Face Time via IPhone 4S

This feature allow me to make a call with video and the call is using the WIFI internet Thus I always use this feature to communicate with my relative and my close friend who is using the IPhone .This have save me a lot as the call is free as the call use the internet data.

My Blackberry Curve is always hanging and spinning the clock and full memory. This problem has made me headache as I do not know how to solve it. What I normally do is to pull out the battery and put back. I have also removed some of the application and deleted old SMS but still happened. Should I buy a new BlackBerry Z10? But I don’t like touch screen…….I’m use to keypad….so how........ha ha ha
